Treating MS Part 2: Thank god for the Australian PBS

Thank god for the Australian PBS

As I wrote last week, Gilenya is my new best friend: a daily oral tablet to manage my MS.

I am horrified by the cost. And deeply grateful for Australia’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, the PBS.

Thanks to the PBS, Gilenya costs me about 1.5 per cent of what it would otherwise cost… and does cost in other countries, including the United States.

All I can say is thank god.

Of course, there is a downside. The reason why the Australian Government subsidises an $83 tablet per day for me is that without treatment, it would cost the taxpayer significantly more when I repeatedly end up in emergency room.

A distressing thought.

And in other news

As many of you know, elephant journal republished my previous blog, Explaining what MS feels like: Words don’t mean what they used to, as Putting it into words: What it feels like to have MS.

As of today, there are 2,100 views and counting.

Thank you for all those who took a look.
